LA ISLA DEL TESORO
Descubiertas por Cristóbal Colón en su cuarto viaje a América, las Islas Caimán fueron por excelencia el centro de la acción de los piratas del mar Caribe durante el siglo XVII. Situadas al noroeste de Jamaica, entre Cuba y Honduras, inhabitadas y sin control activo de la corona española, se convirtieron rápidamente en un santuario ideal para el desarrollo de la piratería.
El famoso bucanero británico Francis Drake bautizó las islas con su nombre actual y las utilizó con frecuencia como base de operaciones para atacar galeones españoles que transportaban metales preciosos hacia Europa.
Hoy en día, esta nación de cincuenta mil habitantes se ha convertido en la quinta plaza financiera mundial, detrás de Londres, Nueva York, Tokio y Hong Kong. Existen unas quinientas entidades bancarias habilitadas, unas cien mil empresas registradas y en su jurisdicción se almacena la cuantiosa suma de 2,1 trillones de dólares, suficientes para satisfacer las necesidades alimentarias y sanitarias en todo el planeta.
Sorprende el paralelismo entre la antigua época de las Islas Caimán y su situación actual: piratas y ejecutivos haciendo lo mismo de siempre, buscando un buen lugar donde esconder sus tesoros.
Discovered by Christopher Columbus on his fourth voyage to America, the Cayman Islands were the definitive center of pirate activity in the Caribbean Sea, during the seventeenth century. Located northwest of Jamaica, between Cuba and Honduras, uninhabited and without active control by the Spanish crown, they quickly became an ideal sanctuary for the development of piracy.
The famous British buccaneer Francis Drake gave the islands their current name and frequently used them as a base to attack Spanish galleons carrying precious metals to Europe.
Today, this nation of fifty thousand people has become the world's fifth largest financial center, after London, New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong. There are about five-hundred banking institutions operating on the island and a hundred thousand registered companies. In addition, the large sum of 2.1 trillion dollars, enough money to satisfy the health and nutrition needs of the entire planet, is deposited within its jurisdiction.
Surprising parallels can be drawn between the Cayman Islands of old times and its current status: pirates and executives doing as they have always done, looking for a good place to hide their treasures.
